Jim Bognet: Congress Must Get Its Act Together and Pass Legislation to Accelerate Economic Recovery from Coronavirus
HAZLETON- Jim Bognet released the following statement regarding this morning’s employment report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) July 2020 jobs report:
“The job numbers today show positive progress toward economic recovery and over a million new jobs created in the United States in July. The Covid-19 pandemic has presented an unprecedented challenge to Americans and our economy, and today’s numbers show what I have seen first-hand in the eighth district of Pennsylvania – that we are strong, united and determined to beat this virus together and get back to work. In Pennsylvania, we believe in the dignity of work and want to work, but many of our neighbors are suffering and can’t find employment.
“I also hope the 10% unemployment rate serves as a wakeup call to both parties in Congress that they cannot leave Americans hurting while our economy suffers. Congress must extend additional federal unemployment insurance to workers, and the PPP loan program must be renewed so that small businesses can continue to weather this storm while keeping their employees working.
“Nancy Pelosi and Matt Cartwright should have the House in session for as long it takes to pass a bill to help the tens of millions of Americans suffering today. That goes for Republicans and Democrats in the Senate as well; they ought to stay in session, debate, deliberate, and deliver for the people. It is inexcusable that multi-millionaires Matt Cartwright and Nancy Pelosi are heading to one of their many fancy vacation homes instead of working overtime to help struggling Americans. In Congress, I will fight to protect American workers and support small businesses.”
